Morgan State extends to 5-0 at home, edge Wildcats 59-50

Morgan State guard Jerrell Green converted clutch free throws down the stretch to help fend off Bethune-Cookman and come away with a 59-50 win. The victory extended the Bears home winning streak to 5-0 at Hill Field House.

Morgan State improved to 9-8 overall and 4-1 in the MEAC while the Wildcats fell to 7-11 (2-3 MEAC).

Junior Marquise Kately finished with his third dunk of the game to give the Bears a 53-42 advantage at the 3:20 mark.

However, the Wildcats mounted a last minute surge and cut the Bears lead to 53-48 following an ?off-glass’ three-pointer by Dominique Whatley with just over 2 minutes left to play.

The Wildcats ended up sending Green to the foul line in the closing moments. The Baltimore product stepped up and nailed five of the Bears last eight free throws to help solidify the Bears win.

Green finished the game with a team-high four assists, but he had a tough night from the floor with four turnovers and 1-for-5 shooting from the field.

Bethune-Cookman trailed 30-15 at halftime before switching to a full-court trapping defense and ended up scoring the first 8 points of the second half behind the play of Dewayne Pettus and Jimmy Hudson. Pettus found Hudson for an open three-pointer to trim the Bears lead to 30-23 with 18:00 remaining.

Hudson led the Wildcats with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Pettus scored 15 points and was 7-for-9 from the free throw line.

Despite the Wildcats attempts to chip away at the lead, Kately answered by scoring 13 of his 15 points (7-9 FG) in the second half. Green dished to Kately for a two-handed slam to give the Bears its largest lead of the half at 39-25 with 14:10 remaining.

Boubacar Coly, who was named earlier today as the MEAC’s Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time, led the Bears on the glass with another double-digit performance with 11 boards and two blocked shots.

Reggie Holmes led the Bears in scoring with a game-high 16 points, while Jamar Smith added 10 points and six rebounds.

John Holmes, who came into the ballgame as the Wildcat’s leading scorer averaging 14.6 ppg, was held scoreless in the first half and finished the night with 9 points and four rebounds.

Morgan State finished the game by shooting 44.9 percent (22-49) from the field, and shot 11-22 (50%) in the second half.
