Morgan State remains unblemished at home, upend Rattlers 57-41

Senior guard Jerrell Green scored a game- and career-high 15 points and Boubacar Coly added a career-high 19 rebounds with five blocked shots to lead the Bears to a 57-41 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday at Hill Field House.

The win snapped FAMU’s four-game winning streak against the Bears dating back to 2004, and marked their largest victory against the Rattlers since a 106-72 win in 2003 at Hill Field House.

Morgan State improved to 3-1 in the MEAC and 8-8 overall. The Bears also enhanced their home record to 4-0 this season, while the Rattlers dropped to 1-3 in the MEAC and 5-11 overall.

Green led the Bears in scoring for the first time in his career and made the most of his free throw opportunities by connecting on 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Morgan State held a 14-5 advantage, following a three-pointer by senior Karanvir Aujla with 6:02 remaining in the half. The Rattlers did not convert their first field goal until Lamar Twitty hit a layup at the 5:08 mark.

The Bears pushed their lead to as many as 14 points and led 24-12 at halftime.

Neither team had a stellar shooting performance. Morgan State shot 25.9% (7-27) from the field in the first half and finished the game by converting 18-of-52 (34.6%) shots, while the Rattlers shot 12-of-44 (27.3%) from the field and made 1-of-9 three-pointers for the game.

Coly played a big role in the Rattlers shooting woes. The three-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week hauled down a game-high 19 rebounds, 15 in the first half, and was an intimidator in the paint with five blocked shots and altered a number of shot attempts.

Coly's 19 rebounds mark the most by an individual so far this season in the MEAC. The 6-9, 220-pound forward entered the contest as the MEAC's leading rebounder and ranked 16th in the nation (10 rpg), tied with UNC's Tyler Hanbrough.

The Rattlers did not have a single player finish in double-figures and were led by Joe Ballard with eight points and eight rebounds, while Akini Akini and Lamar Twitty added seven points apiece.

Morgan State outrebounded the Rattlers 44-34 and got 22 points from their bench tonight.

The Bears built their largest lead of the game after Jermaine “Itchy” Bolden found Reggie Holmes for a three-pointer to give Morgan State a 42-20 lead with 13:14 remaining in the contest. The Rattlers never got any closer than 15 points.

Bolden finished with a game-high seven assists and four steals, while Marquise Kately and Jamar Smith chipped in seven points each.
