HORNETS CLUTCH SHOOTING TOO MUCH FOR SPARTANS

Clutch shooting by the Delaware State Hornets proved to be too much for the Norfolk State Spartans as they cruised to a 69-54 win. The win marked their third straight in a row and snapped a four game win streak for the Spartans.

Holding a six point lead (16-10) with 10:10 left in the first half, the Hornets closed out the half outscoring the Spartans 23-9 and took a 20 point lead 39-19 into the locker room. The Hornets shot 55-percent (16-29) from the floor and defensively held the Spartans to 36-percent (8-22). DSU also forced the Spartans into 10 first half turnovers.

In the second half, the Hornets kept up the intensity on defense and continued their hot shooting as freshman guard Trevor Welcher played a major part in keeping the Spartans at bay scoring five of his eight second half points in the last five minutes of the game.

Senior forward Roy Bright led all scorers with 20 points and a team-high six rebounds. Also in double digits was junior guard Donald Johnson who finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

NSU leading scorer Tony Murphy, who came into the contest averaging 18.9 points per game, finished with eight points. Leading the Spartans was junior guard Corey Lyons with 16 points.
