Hampton proved to be too much for the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams on Monday evening at the LJVM Coliseum as the Lady Pirates handed WSSU a 58-38 defeat in the first game of the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Classic.
The Lady Rams shot only 23 percent from the field during the game’s first 20 minutes of play as Hampton jumped out to an 23 point advantage en route to routing WSSU.
While the Lady Rams hit only six of their 26 first-half field goals, the Lady Pirates shot a blistering 53.3 percent from the field over the course of the game’s first 20 minutes. Hampton connected on 16 of 30 attempts from the field including a three-of-eight shooting performance from behind the three-point arc.
The Lady Rams forced 12 Hampton turnovers in the first half yet generated only five points off of those turnovers. Hampton used a full-court press of their own to generate 14 WSSU giveaways that were converted into 22 points.
The Lady Rams held the Lady Pirates to 18 points in the second half of play and combined to score 18 points of their own, holding Hampton to a 23 percent field-goal shooting half in the game’s final 20 minutes.
Leading the way for WSSU was Corbin Bradford who tallied 15 points and chipped in with six rebounds in the loss. The Lady Pirates were led by Ashlee Finley who recorded 14 points and seven rebounds in the win.
The loss drops the Lady Rams to 1-13 overall while the Lady Pirates move to 10-6 overall (4-0 MEAC) with the victory.
Winston-Salem State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. as they travel to Greensboro, NC to face the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State at the Corbett Center.
