The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams shot 22 percent from the field at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and fell in defeat to the Maryland Eastern Shore by the score of 82-46 in women’s basketball action on Saturday evening as WSSU dropped to 0-11 on the season.
Maryland-Eastern Shore opened the contest on an 8-0 run over the course of the first 3:14 of play as the Lady Rams were able to muster only a pair of free throws during the contests’ first nine-plus minutes of play.
A Corbin Bradford lay-up at the 10:38 mark of the first half would give the Lady Rams their first field goal and cut the UMES lead to 19-4 but the damage had been done as the Lady Hawks opened up a double-digit lead that they would never relinquish en route to keeping WSSU winless on the season.
The Lady Rams would hit only six field goals in the game’s first 20 minutes of play as they shot 22.2 percent from the floor, missing 21 of their 27 first-half shot attempts. The poor shooting would result in a 29-point deficit for the Lady Rams heading into the locker at halftime trailing 46-17.
Second half action would see the Lady Rams mount a stiffer challenge as the Lady Hawks, a team that outscored the Lady Rams by 29 points in the first 20 minutes, would outscore WSSU by seven points in the final 20 minutes of play.
Despite the valiant second half, the Lady Rams would fall in defeat to the Lady Hawks by the final 36-point margin as WSSU falls to 0-11 on the season.
Leading the way for the Lady Rams was Corbin Bradford who tallied a game-high 16 points as she was one of only two players to score in double-figures for WSSU. Joining Bradford in double-figures was Nikki Kee who recorded 15 points.
UMES was led by Chena Parker who recorded a game-high 22 points in the win as she led four Lady Hawks into double-figure scoring.
WSSU drops to 0-11 with the loss while the Maryland Eastern Shore improves to 7-6 overall with the win.
The Lady Rams return to action on Monday at the Coliseum Annex at 5:30 pm as they play host to the defending MEAC Champion Delaware State Lady Hornets.
