Spartans Volleyball Goes 0-3 at Battle at the Beach

Norfolk State went 0-3 this weekend at the UNC Wilmington Battle at the Beach Tournament at Hanover Hall. The Spartans lost 30-26, 30-22, 30-26 to UNCW Friday night then 30-22, 30-20, 30-26 to Campbell and 30-19, 30-13, 30-28 to Presbyterian on Saturday.

Freshman Heather Quinn was named to the all-tournament team after recording 23 kills, 2.5 blocks, and hitting .432 in the three games.

Against UNCW, Quinn hit a match- and career-high .769 with 10 kills and no errors to lead the Spartans (2-10). Junior Yolanda Roberts hit .222 with nine kills, 10 digs, and two aces, while Shardonay Blueford contributed seven kills, 12 digs, and two solo blocks.

Paula McConnell, Lindsey Strucko and Rachael Caricato posted 10 kills apiece for the Seahawks (2-6). Jill Hoeck had 30 assists and six kills and Ashlyn Morris had five aces.

In the Campbell game, Quinn posted 10 kills, 2.5 blocks and a .364 hitting percentage. Senior Vanessa Faircloth had seven kills, three blocks (two solo) and hit .463. Sophomore Solange Honore had 28 assists, two kills and three digs.

Taylor Deering had a match-high 22 kills for the Fighting Camels (5-7). Caitlin Bendy chipped in with nine kills, while Melissa Harvey had 27 digs.

In the final match of the day, Roberts paced the Spartans will 11 kills and had the team’s only solo block of the match. Junior Chantel Cherry had eight kills and three digs.

For Presbyterian, Lauren Mason led the Blue Hose (6-4) with 16 kills and had 11 digs.

The Spartans return to action on Sept. 14 when they take on Rutgers at 7 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J.
