LADY WILDCATS LOSE IN FIVE TO THE LADY BULLDOGS

South Carolina State defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-2, (24-30, 30-28, 30-24, 20-30, 15-7), in its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up of the week. With the victory, the Lady Bulldogs pick up its first conference win of the season.

Bethune-Cookman took game one, 30-24. The Lady Bulldogs (7-14, 1-1 MEAC), came out fighting in Game Two, forcing the Lady Wildcats, (2-7, 02 MEAC), into a point-for-point exchange for the first portion of game. The Lady Wildcats managed take a seven point advantage at 20-13, but the Lady Bulldogs came storming back with a vengeance, going on a 17-8 run to win game two, 30-28.

Game three belonged to SC State, with the Lady Bulldogs jumping out to a 5-2 lead and never relinquishing it, eventually winning, 30-24.

Game four was once again was a point-for-point battle in the beginning. The Lady Wildcats to take a one-point lead at 10-9 and never looked back, eventually winning game four 30-20, and forcing a game five.

SC State appeared to have game five in their control as they jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but the Lady Wildcats would not be outdone, as they quickly tied the game at three all. The Lady Bulldogs, put together a string of points going up 8-4 on the changeover. A couple of kills by the Lady Bulldog capped with a Red Card on Bethune-Cookman’s coach, which consequently gave an additional point to the Lady Bulldogs, sealed game five at 15-7 and the match at 3-2 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Senior Monique Walker and freshman Jarne Gleaton led SC State in kills with 15 and 14 respectively. Walker also led the way defensively for the Lady Bulldogs, recording a season-high 25 digs.

Kaiyana Johnson, Danielle Goodrum and Chelle Ticeson each recorded double-digit kills for the Lady Wildcats with 14, 13 and 10 respectively. Alyse Guzman recorded a game-high 28 digs to lead Bethune-Cookman defensively.

SC State will travel to Norfolk, Va., on Tuesday, Oct. 2 to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State in a MEAC contest. The Lady Bulldogs will host those same Spartans a little over a week later on Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Orangeburg.
