South Carolina State fell to North Carolina A&T, 3-2, (23-30, 30-28, 19-30, 30-27, 13-15), in a hard fought volleyball conference match-up in Dukes Gymnasium.

The match marked the first time the SC State’s head coach Millicent Sylvan faced her former team, (Sylvan coached NC A&T from 2004-2006).

The Lady Aggies (1-16, 1-0 MEAC) took Game One, 30-23. The Lady Bulldogs (6-14, 0-1 MEAC) would even the match at 1-1 with a 30-28 victory in Game Two. NC A&T appeared to have control of the match as they defeated SC State in Game Three, 30-19, to go up two games to one.

SC State would not be outdone, appearing to have control of Game Four with a 27-22 lead; however, NC A&T would go on a 5-2 run to pull the game within two at 29-27. A kill by the SC State’s Linnie Garrett would seal the deal for the Lady Bulldogs, as they went on to win the game, 30-27, and force a Game Five.

Game five belonged to NC A&T early as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Lady Aggies held an 8-4 lead on the changeover, but the Lady Bulldogs would not roll over easily, as they went on a 7-3 run to pull the game to within two at 11-13. SC State managed to come within one at 13-14, but a service error by Garrett gave NC A&T Game Five at 13-15 and the match at 2-3.

Garrett and freshman Jarne Gleaton led the way for SC State with 19 and 18 kills respectively. The Lady Bulldogs had three players to record double-digit digs led by Laura Waters-Brown with 17. Monique Walker and Erinn Phillips had 15 and 10 digs respectively.
