B-CU VOLLEYBALL DOWNS SAVANNAH STATE, 3-0

Keisha Vicks collected a career-high 16 kills while teammate Chelle Ticeson posted 10 kills of her own to march Bethune-Cookman past visiting Savannah State , 3-0 in a volleyball match-up at Moore Gymnasium on Tuesday night in Daytona Beach, Fla. B-CU took the match in straight games on scores of 30-21, 30-18 and 30-16.

Bethune-Cookman (1-3) used the best hitting performance as a team in the Vanessa Cogswell era as head coach. The Wildcats collected a team hitting percentage of .495 to power them towards the victory.

The first game was the most contested of all as Savannah State (4-6) banged home a team-high 13 kills with just three errors to give the Tigers a chance at the win. Led by Donna Jenkins and the set-up play of April Hayes, the Tigers were in prime form early on.

B-CU countered with nine (9) consecutive points down the stretch, however, to put the Tigers away in the first game. Senior Keisha Vicks collected seven kills on the opening game to help B-CU towards the win.

In the second and third games, SSU looked overmatched in the height department as sophomore blocker Chelle Ticeson and setter Julie Gibson combined for seven of the Wildcats eight blocks on the night. Gibson, a freshman from Espanola, N.M., made her mark as a setter as well with 23 assists, sharing time alongside sophomore Kumiko Chow.

Chow led the team with a match-high 25 assists on the evening for the Wildcats. Ticeson pitched in with 10 kills as well in the power supply for the Wildcats

Jenkins led Savannah State on the night with 12 kills and four digs. She also collected one block assist. Behind her was Danielle Sampson with six kills and a team-high eight digs.

B-CU hooked up with Vicks for a match-high 16 kills on just 24 attacks. She also dished up four assists and two service aces for the maroon and gold Wildcats. That was contributed with her defensive effort of a team second-best seven digs.

Behind Vicks was Ticeson with her 10-kill performance and five blocks (four assisted). Chow led the way on defense with eight digs, while freshman Shanicka Reddick pitched in with six digs.

The Wildcats will now travel to Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fla. on Thursday at 7 p.m.
