Volleyball 9/1/2007 4:00:00 AM MEAC Media Relations Lady Bulldogs Finish 1-1 on Day Two of the Hampton Tournament The South Carolina State volleyball team finished runner-up to Southern University at the Hampton University Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament in Hampton, Va. SC State (3-7) finished 1-1 on the final day of the tournament. In its first match of the day, SC State defeated Winston-Salem State, 3-0, (30-24, 30-28, 30-14). Monique Walker led all attackers in kills with 14. Jarne Gleaton and Laura Waters-Brown each contributed 10 kills in the victory. Walker also had a good defensive game as she picked up 11 digs and put back two block assists in the match. Anika Barnwell led the Lady Rams in kills with seven and Stephanie Douthit led the team in digs with 10. SC State fell to Southern, 3-1, (25-30, 30-27, 24-30, 26-30), in the championship game of the tournament. Linnie Garrett led SC State in kills with 14. The Lady Bulldogs had four players to record double-digit kills as Walker and Waters-Brown put down 13, Kathlyn Stephenson put down 11 and Garrett. Walker led the team defensively with 16 digs, one block solo and two block assists. Ena Payne recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs to lead Southern. Monique Walker and Jarne Gleaton were named to the 2007 Hampton University Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament. Walker, a 5-1, senior, middle-blocker from Clovis, New Mexico, finished the tournament with 67 kills, 18 total blocks, three assists and 67 digs.
