South Carolina State went 2-1 on the first day
of the Hampton University Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament in Hampton,
Va. SC State (2-6) finished the day tied with Southern and Hampton but
obtained the #1 seed by virtue of games won.
After having a two game led in its first match
of the day, the Lady Bulldogs fell to Southern, 3-2, (30-23, 30-28,
26-30, 28-30, 13-15). For the first time this season, the SC State had
four players to record double-digit kills led by Monique Walker with
18. Jarne Gleaton had 14, and Linnie Garrett and Laura Waters-Brown
each had 12 kills in the match. Walker also led the team defensively
with 12 kills.
Candace Southall led Southern in kills with 14.
In its second match of the day the Lady Bulldogs picked up its first
win of the season as they defeated Winston-Salem State, 3-1, (30-23,
23-30, 30-23, 30-26). Garrett led a trio of players in kills with 17.
Walker and Waters-Brown put down 14 and 11 kills respectively. Walker
had a great defensive match with 18 digs. Gleaton and Waters-Brown had
10 kills each in the victory.
Anika Barnwell led Winston-Salem in kills and digs with 14 and 11.
In their closing match of the day, SC State defeated Hampton, 3-0,
(30-25, 30-24, 30-27). Kathlyn Stephenson was the only Lady Bulldog to
finish with double-digit kills with 11. Gleaton picked up 12 digs in
the win.
Morgan Williams and Aaryn Harrison each had 11 kills for the Lady Pirates while Alyssa Jackson picked up 13 digs in the loss.
SC State will face Winston-Salem State at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Depending on
the outcome of the game, the Lady Bulldogs will face either Hampton or
Southern in the consolation or championship game at 1 or 3 p.m.
