UMES Adds Shaylin Sommer to VB Roster

Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) added another highly talented player to its growing stable as Head Women’s Volleyball Coach Don Metil announced the signing of Shaylin Sommer. Metil also announced the very competitive schedule for the 2007 campaign.

Sommer, a 6-2 middle blocker will add instant depth to a young team that was third in the MEAC last season and posted a 19-15 overall record under former Head Coach Alex Temkin.

“Shaylin will bring some height and west coast experience to the middle position. She has played a lot of positions in club and high school, and because of that she gives us some options on the court. She will be a great fit for us.”

Sommer has already racked up the awards at the high school level, earning her schools’ Most Inspirational Female Athlete of the Year award while being named All San Luis Obispo County first team, All PAC 7 League first team, and the team’s Most Valuable Player, all in 2006. The previous season Sommer was All PAC 5 League 2nd Team and took the Coaches Award and Most Improved Player Award for her team.

She is used to playing a high level as her team made the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs in 2006 and went to the quarterfinals the year before. Last season against San Luis Obispo Sommer tallied 17 kills, six blocks, three digs and a pair of aces.

Trent Lunceford, her high school coach, was thrilled with Sommer’s decision. “I’m happy that Shaylin has an opportunity to play at the college level. She has definitely improved the last three years and she’s worked really hard.”

Sommer joins new incoming Hawks Christina Estebane’ and Whitney Johnson.
