HAMPTON DROPS OPENING ROUND MATCH AGAINST VIRGINIA

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Hampton men's tennis team began its play in the 2007 NCAA Tournament but fell in less than two hours to the University of Virginia 4-0 in a first round match at the Snyder Tennis Center.

"They are an excellent team,” said head coach Dr. Robert Martin Screen. “The Cavaliers made few errors, so we must now learn to make fewer errors and to put more pressure on our opponents. We will be back.”

In doubles, the Cavaliers quickly won at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take the opening point. The No. 2 ranked duo of Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey topped Seo-Jae Chang and Alin Zorila-Ditoiu 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Seconds after the win at No. 1, Houston Barrick and Dominic Inglot clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-1 win over Sung-Kwon Baek and Dong Yeun Kim at the No. 2 position.

In singles, Huey made the score 2-0 as he completed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Zorila-Ditoiu at No. 2 singles. The nation’s no. 2 ranked singles Devvarman followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chang at the No. 1 position. Inglot clinched the match at the No. 3 position, with his 6-2, 6-0 win over Baek.

"Overall we played well which is shown by us getting to this point,” said junior Nicholas Hudson. “We are already looking forward to next year.”

Although the Cavaliers have won the last eight contests versus the Pirates, Hampton still owns the series 11-8.
