HORNETS DROP NIT OPENER 74-50 TO WEST VIRGINIA

The shooting drought the Hornets suffered in the championship game of the MEAC tournament, continued in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), as West Virginia University defeated Delaware State University 74-50. The win improved the Mountaineers to 23-9, while the Hornets closed out the 2006-07 season with a 21-13 mark. WVU will move on to the second round of the NIT and will play host to the winner of the Alabama-Massachusetts game.

The Hornets did the one thing that would hurt them tremendously, have a bad shooting night from the floor. That is exactly was the big story in the first half for the Hornets. While the Mountaineers were having a red hot first half, shooting 62.5% (15-24) from the floor the Hornets were ice cold shooting 24% (6-25). It was also the lowest point production in a half for DSU all season, as WVU closed out the first half with a 17-0 run to take a 39-13 advantage into the locker room. The Hornets did not score in the final five minutes of the half.

The second half was a lot better for the Hornets as they outscored WVU 37-35, but the 26 point whole was too deep to climb out. The Hornets did improve their shooting to 45% from the floor, but their dismal 20.7% (6-29) from three point range for the game did not help matters.

Senior guard Jahsha Bluntt led all scorers and rebounders with 19 points and seven rebounds. Aaron Fleetwood added 14 points.

Pacing WVU was Frank Young with 17 points, along with Alex Ruoff and Jamie Smalligan who finished with 14 and 13 points respectively.
