MEAC Announces Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

 South Carolina State’s Marie Reid was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. North Carolina A&T’s Jaleesa Sams earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Hampton’s Artavia Burns was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Reid (Center, 6-4, So., Augusta, Georgia) shot 54-percent from the field (6-of-11) and 78-percent (11-of-14) from the charity stripe for a total of 23 points in a 61-58 loss to Jacksonville. Reid added four rebounds, two assists and one block in 26 minutes of play for the Lady Bulldogs.

Sams (Forward, 5-11, Fr., New Castle, Pennsylvania) scored 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and a perfect 1-of-1 from behind the arc in a 74-65 loss to No. 12 Texas A&M. Sams grabbed seven boards, one steal and one block in a defensive effort for the Lady Aggies.

Burns (Guard, 6-1, Sr., Dallas, Texas) recorded 10 rebounds (five defensive) and averaged three steals per game in three outings for the Lady Pirates. Burns posted three rebounds (two defensive) and a game-high five steals in 27 minutes of play in a win over Tennessee-Martin.

Other Top Performers:

Corin Adams (MSU) tallied 18 points on 8-of-10 from the free throw line in a win over Georgia Southern.

Amber Bland (NCAT) scored a game-high 23 points and added seven rebounds against No. 12 Texas A&M.

Rachel Butler (Ham) averaged 14.3 points for a total of 43 points to lead the Lady Pirates to a 1-2 mark at last weekend’s Iowa State Cyclone Shoot-Out.

Brittany Dodson (MSU) came off the bench and scored 11 points and three rebounds against St. John’s.

April McBride (UMES) grabbed 11 rebounds (seven defensive), dished out one steal and posted one block against Canisius.

Casey Morton (UMES) recorded seven points, grabbed four rebounds and handed out two assists for the Lady Hawks.

Quanneisha Perry (Ham) averaged 5.7 points and six rebounds in three games for the Lady Pirates last week.

Aaries Reed (MSU) scored 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting and hit 5-of-6 free throws in her first career start.
