WSSU Lady Rams Take 50-35 Loss to Alabama State Hornets

The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-10) continued their recent struggles, Saturday when the team suffered a 50-35 loss to the Alabama State Lady Hornets (3-7). The Lady Rams played one of their better defensive games of the season, but could not muster enough offense to keep up with and aggressive Alabama State team.

The loss was especially tough for the Lady Rams offense that totaled just 13 field goals in the loss and shot 27.1% from the field. On the bright side, WSSU freshman guard Nikki Kee continues to improve, scoring 11 points in the loss and reaching double-digit scoring in her third straight game. She was the only Lady Ram player to reach double-digit scoring in the game. Fellow freshman forward Vontisha Woods pulled in a career-high 12 rebounds in the loss as well.

Despite the bad ending, the Lady Rams opened the game with a solid start to an early 8-2 lead on a three-pointer by WSSU freshman guard Rene Rector. However, an 11-4 Alabama State run would eliminate the Lady Ram lead and give the Hornets their first lead of the game, 13-12 with 10:18 left in the first half. The WSSU offense would shut down for the rest of the half, however, with the Lady Rams scoring just three points in the remainder of the half. The Hornets would take advantage of the Lady Rams’ drought outscoring the Lady Rams 11-3 to cap a 22-7 run and take a 23-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half wasn’t much better for the Lady Rams who scored just 19 points in the second half. The squad found themselves down by as many as 18 points, 40-22 after Alabama State opened the half with a 17-6 run. Though the Lady Rams were strong defending the paint, the squad gave up three ASU three-pointers and six free throws to the Lady Hornets during the run. Down the stretch of the half, the Lady Rams could never get closer than 15 points of their foes. The final ten minutes of the game saw the Lady Rams notch just three field goals and end the day with the loss.

With the loss the Lady Rams fall to 0-10, but will have a bit of rest before returning to action. The squad will next take the court when they host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks on January 12th at the LJVM Coliseum Annex.
