Senior Rashida Suber scored 16 points and Coppin State snapped a four-game losing streak with a 60-55 non-conference victory over Pepperdine on Friday in the Coppin Center.
Coppin State (5-8) had to survive a late comeback by the Waves including a chance to tie the game on the final possession. Trailing 58-55, Pepperdine attempted to set up a game-tying three-point attempt but Suber intercepted the cross court pass and put the finishing touches on the Eagles win with a layup at the buzzer.
After being held to four points in the Eagles last game versus Louisville, Suber scored 12 first-half points and finished the game 8-of-18 from the floor. She also had nine rebounds, eight steals and a blocked shot. She also moved to within 46 points of breaking the Coppin State career scoring record.
Whitney Cunningham had 11 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots and Danielle Anders scored 14 points in her first start of the season.
The Eagles limited Pepperdine to 27.9 percent shooting from the floor and forced 20 turnovers.
Pepperdine (5-5) was led by Jessica Ross who scored 12 points, while Daphanie Kennedy added 10 points.
The Eagles appeared to have complete control of the contest when Anders made two free throws with 14:25 to play giving CSU a 44-26 lead.
Three-pointers by Katie Menton and Ross keyed a 15-3 Wave run that trimmed the lead to 47-41 with 9:38 remaining.
The Eagles answered with baskets by Shalamar Oakley and Anders to increase the lead to 51-41 with 8:43 left.
Pepperdine then went on a 9-0 run, most of which came from the free throw line, that cut the lead to 51-50 with 5:38 remaining.
Free throws from Jennifer Martin and Anders and a layup by Oakley increased the CSU lead to 56-50 with 2:59 to play in the game.
Daphanie Kennedy made three of four free throw attempts to bring the Waves to within 56-53, but Oakley hit a clutch jumper on the baseline giving Coppin State a 58-53 lead.
Teena Wickett scored inside with 49 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 58-55 and the Eagles turned the ball over on their next trip giving the Waves an opportunity to tie the score.
