MEAC Announces Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

 Norfolk State’s Areya Walker was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Walker’s teammate Tiffany Gadsden was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman’s Sarah Bolden earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Walker (Forward, 6-0, Sr., Portsmouth, Virginia) was named to the North Florida All-Tournament team after averaging 19 points and 16.5 rebounds in two games for the Spartans last week. Walker recorded a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds against North Florida and added one block and three steals. She followed by scoring half of the Spartans 58 points (24) along with a career-high 19 rebounds against Savannah State.

Bolden (Forward, 6-1, Fr., Slidell, Louisiana) was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field en route to 10 points for the Lady Wildcats last week in their non-conference win over North Carolina Central. Bolden also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and recorded two steals and one block on the defensive effort.

Gadsden (Forward/Center, 6-2, So., Columbia, South Carolina) tallied a team-high 14 rebounds (11 defensive) along with one steal and four blocks against North Florida. She followed with four rebounds (three defensive) and four blocks against Savannah State. Gadsden leads the MEAC with 28 total blocks and averages 3.5 blocks per game. This is the second time this season that Gadsden has earned Defensive Player of the week honors.

Other Top Performers:

Natasha Ferguson (B-CU) recorded 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field along with four rebounds, four assists and five steals in a non-conference win over North Carolina Central.

April McBride (UMES) tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals against Syracuse.

Marie Reid (SCSU) recorded her first double-double of the year with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Charleston.
