MEAC ANNOUNCES WOMEN'S WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS

 South Carolina State’s Sophilia Hipps was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Bethune-Cookman’s Demetria Frank was named Rookie of the Week while Florida A&M’s Taniyah Dawson earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Hipps (Guard, 5-8, So., Spencer, North Carolina) recorded a career-high 27 points while shooting 53-percent from the field (8-of-15) and 81-percent from the free-throw line (9-of-11) to help the Lady Bulldogs to a 62-54 win over Savannah State last week. Hipps added two rebounds, five assists and two steals in the victory.

Frank (Guard, 5-9, Fr., Miami, Florida) led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 13 points, on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, against Claflin. Frank dished out a team-high three assists and added two steals on defense for Bethune-Cookman.

Dawson (Guard, 5-7, Jr., Mesquite, Texas) collected five steals that resulted in five Lady Rattlers’ scores to help Florida A&M come from behind to beat non-conference opponent North Carolina Central. Dawson added five assists in the victory, while also tallying 17 points.

Other Top Performers:

Natasha Ferguson (B-CU) posted five points, pulled down five rebounds and grabbed two steals for the Lady Wildcats.

Stephanie Foster (FAMU) scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half to help Florida A&M top North Carolina Central.

Jaleesa Sams (NCAT) recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and added three assists in a loss to North Carolina State.

Lamona Smalley (NCAT) recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds (five defensive) against North Carolina State.
