A poor defensive effort from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) ended their brief one game winning streak as they lost to Wagner College 105-86 Saturday night in the Spiro Sports Center.
UMES (2-10, 0-1 MEAC) posted a season-high in points as Ed Tyson, who came up one point shy of tying a career-high with 36 points, recorded 12-of-23 shooting from the field including five three-pointers and a perfect 7-of-7 from the line.
“We scored 86 points offensively but that was not the problem,” said Coach Meredith Smith. “It’s tough to get a lead when the other team shot the way they did in the first half.”
Wagner (7-3, 1-0 NEC) came out on fire in the first half, finishing 22-of-32 from the floor for a near flawless 68.8 percent (52.4 percent overall). They would take a 55-38 halftime lead on a last second three-pointer from Jamal Smith.
The Hawks tied the game at four all on a Denzel Jackson lay-in but a Durell Vinson free-throw would break the tie and spark a 14-2 run to give Wagner the lead for good.
After winning the battle on the boards in their previous game, the Hawks were out rebounded, 54 -35, and gave up a season-high 25 boards on the offensive end which led to 27 second chance points. In addition, they were outscored in the paint, 56-28, and allowed 21 fast break points, while accounting for just six of their own.
“We made some plays down low but there were also some we didn’t make,” said Smith.
Overall, the Hawks shot above their season average from the field (38.4 percent), beyond the arc (38.5 percent), and free-throw line (80.4 percent). They also finished with one fewer turnover than the Seahawks, 17-16.
Marc Davis added 15 points on just 3-of-14 shooting, while converting a perfect 9-of-9 from the line to go along with a career-high seven assists for the Hawks. Aleksandar Popovic recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Bright chipped in with a career-high 12 points on four-of-nine three-point shooting off the bench.
The Seahawks had five players finish in double figures. James Ulrich led with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Jamal Smith added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Vinson recorded a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Michael Orock and Llewchean Radford added 15 and 11 off the bench respectively. Mark Porter dished out a game-high 13 assists.
UMES will take a week off before they host the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday, December 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 E.T.
