MEAC Announces All-MEAC Volleyball Honors

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its 2007 volleyball all-conference teams Thursday night at the annual awards banquet held on the campus of Hampton (Va.) University.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Whitney Johnson was named the 2007 MEAC Player of the Year; Florida A&M’s Jovana Blazeski earned Rookie of the Year accolades and University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Don Metil was named Coach of the Year as voted by the MEAC head volleyball coaches and sports information directors.

Whitney Johnson, MEAC Player of the Year
Whitney Johnson earned Player of the Year honors after leading the conference and ranking 21st in the nation with 4.89 kills per game. She is second in the MEAC with a hitting percentage of .297 and averages 5.42 points per game. The sophomore recorded five double-double performances (kills, digs) and recorded 20-plus kills 11 times this season.




 

 

 

Jovana Blazeski, MEAC Rookie of the Year
Florida A&M freshman Jovana Blazeski garnered Rookie of the Year accolades. The outside hitter tallied double-digit kills in 20-of-21 games played. She recorded six 20-plus kill performances and two 20-plus dig outings in addition to 14 double-doubles (kills, digs). Blazeski leads the MEAC in points (5.45), is third in kills (4.85) and seventh in digs (3.46).


 

 

 

 

Don Metil, MEAC Coach of the Year
Head Coach Don Metil of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore earned Coach of the Year honors. In his first year at the helm of the Lady Hawks, Metil’s team recorded the school’s first undefeated recorded in conference play and posted an unblemished home and away mark. The Lady Hawks concluded the regular-season with a 22-3 record and have maintained a 20-match win streak, the longest active Divison I streak in the nation. As a team, the Lady Hawks led the nation in aces per game (2.96) and were tenth with an 88-percent winning percentage.



Joining Johnson and Blazeski on the 2007 All-MEAC Volleyball First-Team are Esther Johnson of Morgan State, Iva Lakic and Susan Egoavil of Florida A&M and Christina Estebane’ of Maryland Eastern Shore.

The 2007 MEAC Volleyball Championship begins on Friday, November 16 at Hampton (Va.) University.

Two matches start at 11 a.m., as No. 1 Maryland Eastern Shore faces No. 4 Norfolk State, and No. 2 North Carolina A&T plays No. 3 Delaware State. No. 1 Florida A&M matches up against No. 4 Howard, while No. 2 Morgan State and No. 3 Bethune-Cookman face off at 1:30 p.m. Semifinal matches begin on Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The championship match commences at noon on Saturday, November 17.
