Seedings Set for 2007 MEAC Volleyball Tournament Championship

The University of Maryland E. Shore and Florida A&M University earned the top seeds in the northern and southern divisions of the 2007 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship. The championship begins at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 16 in Holland Hall on the campus of Hampton (Va.) University.

The Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore finished the season undefeated (10-0) in MEAC play for the first time in school history and concluded the regular season with a 20-match win streak, the longest active Division I streak in the nation.

For the thirteenth time in school history, the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers also finished regular season play unbeaten (8-0) in conference play. The Lady Rattlers have won the MEAC title the past six seasons and have won nine overall MEAC volleyball titles since 1997.

Morgan State (7-3), runners-up in last year’s championship tournament, won the tiebreaker over Delaware State in the northern division to earn the number two seed in the north. The Lady Hornets closed regular season play on a four-match win streak to finish 7-3 in conference play. Howard rounded out the northern division with the fourth and final seed after posting a 4-6 MEAC mark.

North Carolina A&T (5-3) secured the second seed in the southern division. Bethune-Cookman (3-5) obtained the third seed in the southern division after earning the tiebreaker over the Norfolk State Spartans. Norfolk State (3-5), who wraps up the fourth and final seed in the south, earned their first bid to the conference tournament after being eliminated the previous two years.

Only the top four teams in each division are eligible to compete for the conference title. Seedings are determined by overall conference records. Hampton (2-8), Coppin State (0-10) and South Carolina State (1-7) have been eliminated from tournament play based on their MEAC records.

The MEAC Volleyball Championship begins on Friday, November 16 through Saturday, November 17 at Hampton University.
