MEAC Mourns the Loss of Long-time Official William ?Bill? Whites

William “Bill” Whites, coordinator of women’s basketball officials for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, passed away Wednesday evening, Oct. 24.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, October, 29 at 10 a.m. at Saint Stephen United Church of Christ, 1000 Gorrell Street, Greensboro, NC. The Whites family will receive friends on Sunday, October 28 at 6 p.m. at the church.

Whites served as both a football and basketball official for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) for thirty-four years and was inducted into the CIAA Official Hall of Fame in 1998. In addition to the CIAA, Whites served as an official with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Conference of Carolina, Old Dixie Conference, Southern Conference as well as the MEAC. He was appointed the coordinator for women’s officials of the MEAC in 1995 and served in that capacity until his death.

“Mr. Whites was a consummate professional and an even better person. Our thoughts, prayers, and sincerest condolences go out to the entire Whites family, his lovely wife and daughter,” stated MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas. “He influenced the lives of so many people in a positive way. The MEAC family will surely miss Mr. Whites.”

In addition to his passion for officiating, Whites loved influencing the youth. He retired from Grimsley High School (NC) where he served as the assistant principal. He also dedicated his time as a swim instructor and life guard at the Windsor Community Center and Hayers Taylor YMCA and worked with social organizations including the Flexible Social Club and Meals on Wheels.

Whites, a 1963 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, was also a proud veteran of the United State Marine Corp. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and became a life member in 1978.

Whites is survived by his wife Linda and daughter Anita.
