HORNETS SHUT DOWN AGGIES FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Delaware State scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in a 27-0 victory over North Carolina A&T at Aggie Stadium on Saturday.

The Hornets won their third straight to improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the MEAC.

Delaware State struck right away when Brandon Hudson returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown. The extra point by Peter Gaertner gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game.

A 23-yard punt by North Carolina A&T started Delaware State’s next possession at the Aggie 37-yard line. The Hornets picked up 22 yards before the drive stalled. Gaertner came on to nail a 32-yard field goal that gave the Hornets a 10-lead with 8:26 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets stretched their lead to 17-0 when quarterback Vashon Winton capped off a 13-play, 80-yard drive with one-yard touchdown plunge with 7:27 left in the second quarter. Winton had two first down runs, while Chris Strother had a 22-yard scamper during the drive.

Delaware State opened up a 20-0 lead when Gaertner hit a 45-yard field goal off the crossbar with 1:32 left in the second quarter.

The Hornets closed out the scoring when cornerback Akeem Green returned an interception following a Shelton Morgan pass 86 yards for a touchdown with 4:48 left in the third quarter.

Delaware State recorded its first shutout since a 62-0 victory over Concord (WV) last season.

The Hornet defense held North Carolina A&T tailback Michael Ferguson to 36 yards on 11 carries. Ferguson was second in the MEAC and ninth in the nation in rushing at 124.5 yards per game.

“I feel real good about the win, we have taken another step. Today we found different ways to win a football game; our defense definitely helped us with a shutout,” said DSU head coach Lavan. “I’m just please to get out of this game, now we can get back to Dover so we can work on getting healthy.”

Strong safety Reggie McCoy (sr. Washington, DC) led the Hornets with 10 tackles. He was also credited with 2.5 tackles-for-loss and a sack.

Strother led the Hornets with 63 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Delaware State is 4-0 in the MEAC for the first time since starting 5-0 in 1989.
The Hornets return home to face Morgan State in the annual homecoming contest next Saturday (Oct. 20) at 3:30 p.m.
